    I see dead people....

Today some friends and I went to see "Bodies...The Exhibition" in downtown Seattle.

It was kind of surreal walking into a room full of preserved cadavers, but it was pretty well done.  They gave everyone kind of a cell phone/remote control looking thing......Most of the displays had numbers on them, and you could punch the numbers into the remote and then put it to your ear to hear a short explanation of what you were looking at.

It was laid out in different rooms with different themes like skeleton, muscles, circulatory, nervous system, etc.  They were preserved by replacing all the fluids with a liquid silicone rubber for the most part......some of the circulatory system displays looked like they were in lucite boxes and suspended in some kind of clear solution.  They used bright red and blue dye to differentiate the arteries and veins.

They wouldn't let cameras in, so here are some pictures courtesy of seattle pi:

Its a little expensive at $30, but educational and something you don't see everyday.

    Woo its here!

So the shippers didn't seem to be on top of the ball.  According their website tracking, the bike arrived in Seattle on Monday the 18th.  It wasn't scheduled to be delivered until 20-21 so I just figured they had a lot of other bikes that were in line to be delivered before mine or something.  Finally on the afternoon of the 21st I got a call saying they could deliver it the next day....I was a bit miffed but oh well I can live with it because it was raining that day anyway.

So all day the 22nd I'm waiting at work for the call saying they are about to deliver and I need to go home to receive it.....I get a call around 3 and they say that the driver called in SICK.  GRRRR.  She tells me that my options are drive up to Everett and get it myself or wait until Monday or Tuesday.  The forecast for the weekend is sun and 75 degrees...perfect riding weather, so I don't want so sit around watching TV. I recruit my friend Rob to give me a ride this morning (with bribes of lunch and my great company).

    The results:

    New toy

So I bought a new motorcycle.  The one I wanted is fairly rare in this area and if you can find one, they are overpriced. After doing my research I decided to pull the trigger and have it shipped over.  It got picked up today in maryland and is scheduled to be delivered around the 21st.  I can track the movement through the shipper's website, and made this map showing where the bike is currently:

X marks the spot!  Keep checking everyday!  I know you all care deeply!

Big post with lots of pics will come after I get it.

Don't let your kitty get kidney stones.

    http://home.comcast.net/~ssteffy/spendycat.jpg

So on Wednesday morning I noticed Boxer acting a bit strange.  He would kind of stand with his legs totally extended and not move at all.  He wasn't acting like he was in pain so I didn't think much of it.  I had to come home to get a package that I didn't want sitting on the doorstep and when I checked on him, he was in some visible pain sitting on the bathroom floor and there were some pink dribble marks on the floor so I knew a trip to the vet was in order.

When I picked him up, he felt like he was under pressure so my first thought was kidney stone.  When I opened the cat carrier he climbed right in....he knew he needed a vet visit too.

Dropped him off and they immediately knew he was obstructed.  Catheter time  :P

Anyway they flushed him out and put him on an IV for a couple days.  Now he is on muscle relaxers and kitty morphine.  You can tell by looking at him:

    http://home.comcast.net/~ssteffy/boxer54.jpg

Right now he's camped out on my legs sleeping.  Vet says he should be good as new in a few days.

    Learning is fun sometimes

So last Wednesday I took a floating holiday and took my bike to the racetrack for performance riding school.  The bike technical inspections were at 7am, and the track was about an hour from my house, so I had to get up at about 5:30 in the damn morning.  bleh.

The school structure is here:  http://2-fast.org/school-structure.html  and its the most fun I've had in years.  I'm pretty much a speed hound, but its usually in things that won't kill me like go karts and such.  I've been riding less than a year, so I'm still not feeling totally at home on a bike yet, but I'm pretty confident in my reaction time and my ability to keep track of everything going on around me, so I've been able to get out of some situations that would have spooked other people.  I even bought some leather pants (leather pants aren't gay if you are buying them for motorcycle racing).

Here's me trying to look cool.  (Ignore the double chin...its not cool)

    http://home.comcast.net/~ssteffy/gonnadie.jpg

I learned a lot of stuff about how to take corners, how my form was wrong when leaning off the bike, and just how much you can push these bikes before they reach their limits.  I did get up to about 130-135mph on the straightaway, even on my 15 year old bike, but the bigger ones get up to 180 in no time.  The good thing about bikes is that even though the sense of speed is a lot stronger, the bike becomes more stable the faster you go because of the gyroscopic effect of the spinning wheels.

There was a track photographer, but there wasn't a lot of variety in the pictures taken....there wasn't even anything showing me putting a knee down.  :P

here's what he got of me:

    http://keepsakephotoonline.exposuremanager.com/g/56

The top row 2nd pic isn't me though, he just mixed up the numbers.

I also took some video from my helmet mounted camera, here's a sped up one lap run from my point of view:

    http://home.comcast.net/~ssteffy/2-fast.wmv

Anyway it was a great day, and I can't wait to go back, but I don't think I can afford to do it more than a couple times a year.

Why do people watch this crap?

"Deal or no deal" is the worst show ever conceived.  Game shows that take no skill whatsoever?  Come on even wheel of fortune requires a decent grasp of the language for people to be good at it.

    Weekend project

So I was going to order a cool cat tree for Boxer, but after looking at it, I think I'm going to tackle the project myself and save some money (this assumes my time is worth nothing).  This is close to what I want:

    http://www.iroquoisinnovations.com/images/mellie_on_tree.jpg

The only differences are that my first step will be 2.5 feet off the ground so he has to exert some energy to get up, I will wrap the dowel below the first step with rope so it will be a scratching post, and I'm not going to have a little wooden penthouse at the top, I'll just put his cat bed up there.

Hopefully I'll be able to get it all done this weekend.  I think about little things like what if I use the wrong glue to attach the carpet to the steps and he goes nowhere near it.....if I drill holes through the wooden dowel to fasten the steps to it, will it weaken the integrity so much that the dowel breaks, how will I attach it to the floor without it looking like crap? (I want to be able to remove this with little or no signs that it was ever there)...etc.

He better appreciate all this work!

    Xbox acquired.

What do you get when you cross this:

and 13 hours of standing in line?

    This!

So initially I was planning on going down to Best buy around 5pm after work.  "Leaked" internal memos said that BB was getting 200 of the premium level systems, and I figured that would be plenty of line time to ensure a system.  So I get to work around 10am, and check out the xbox discussion public folder.  At 8:45am there are ~85 people in line.  At 10, there are 150.

I knew I had to get out of there quick or else I'd be stuck without one until who knows when.  Its a fairly slow week at work, many of the developers are taking the whole week off for the holiday, so I decided to take the day as one of my 2 "floating holidays" per year and get down there.  When I got in line about 11am, the rough count to my line position was about 170.  Close, but I figured I was safe.  The line went from the front down the side, and all the way behind home depot, which if you don't know that parking lot I'd say from the front of the line to my position was about 400 yards.  I had my $5 fold up chair from target, I had a fully charged DS and PSP, and a fairly warm coat, but the temperature was quickly dropping.  The first couple hours passed quickly, chatting with the people close to me in line.  I played a lot of Advance wars on the DS and soon it was 4pm and starting to get dark AND COLD.

Drama.  Someone was doing line counts and said that there was a lot of line cutting up ahead of us, and said we were now over the 200 mark because of it.  Police were called in, and many people were removed from line.  Another count was taken, and numbered tickets were handed out.  I was 159.  Then the manager came out to try to explain what was up.  Now for some reason they weren't allowed to say how many systems they actually had, so all we had to go on was the internet rumor mill.  He also said that the store "was required by law" to honor their print ad that promised they would have at least 50 premium systems for the store opening the next morning no matter how many people were lined up.  So that effectively made the "safe line" at 150, and remember I am 159.  Manager starts giving people real vouchers...now these vouchers combined with the earlier line number ticket is what guarantees you a system.  They gave everyone up to 150 a system voucher and he said they had to do another inventory count to determine how many more (if any) they had for tonight. (keep in mind there are about 400 people in line at this point)  30 minutes later he comes back and has 15 more premium system vouchers.  People up to 165 are now safe!

The best buy guys came around giving everyone "Midnight madness launch night" scarves and hats (see top photo) which was nice, but the uncontrollable shivering was growing annoying.  My newest friends next to me in line had a propane camping heater that they sent someone to go fetch, and that thing was a lifesaver.

Rob shows up with food and to hang out for an hour.  We played some mario kart multiplayer and I get tr0wn3d as usual. Thanks for the food!  He takes off to go to a warm house.

Time is going much slower now.  Time for some PSP gametime.  I forgot how fun Wipeout Pure is.  Played it for a good 2 hours racking up gold medals left and right.  One of my old co-workers, Steve Rider was walking by so I yelled at him and we talked for a while.

Manager comes out again, and tells the people past spot 165 that they are having more flown in tomorrow and if they wait in line, and pay tonight, they can come in after 5 tomorrow and pick up their boxes at their leisure (not everyone, but about 200 being flown in) the rest of the people are either gonna have to keep waiting for BB to open in the morning (remember 50 guaranteed) or they are pretty much out of luck.

PARTY BUS!  Party Bus shows up (it also has hydraulics, so its bouncing up and down a little while it plays crappy hip-hop)  They are passing out schwag, I got an xbox live foam football...woop de doo.  Some other people got xbox1 games and a select few got wireless controllers for the 360.

At this point we notice that the line has pretty much disappeared and everyone is in front of Best Buy in a big blob of people.  Everyone makes their way up there and packs together. At about 11:40 the first person walks out holding his xbox over his head to a round of applause.  This guy has been waiting since 5pm FRIDAY NIGHT.  Thats 79 hours in line.

Once I finally got in the store things went fairly smoothly with a big assembly line of games and accessories.  Basically I only wanted one accessory, the rechargeable battery pack and charge system for the controller.  I got the last one.  At this point I just wanted out of there and I couldn't feel my feet.

On the way home out of curiosity I drove by the redmond target.  There were about 40 people wrapped up in chairs waiting for it to open.  For a second I thought about holding my xbox 360 up to the window and honking as I drove by, but I'm not that cruel.

So tired.  But overall it wasn't that bad.

    Oww

So I'm 97% sure I dislocated my left thumb last night.   I've never dislocated or broken anything before thats why its not 100%.

Went twilight bowling for a friend's birthday party last night and while messing around I dropped to the floor and caught myself with hand fully extended.  (spread your fingers as far apart as you can and thats how it hit the ground) with most of my weight landing between my thumb and index finger.  I felt something pop and then when I lifted my hand back off the ground it "popped back in".  I was instantly in more pain than I've been in for quite a while, but since I could bend my thumb I was pretty sure it wasn't broken.

You sure take thumbs for granted when you all of a sudden can't use one.  This morning when I woke up it was noticeably swollen, but not discolored or causing pain or anything...I think I came *really* close to breaking it and just lucked out.  If I try to bend it in certain directions it still hurts like a SOB so I'm gonna have to take it easy for a couple weeks I think.

    By the way I bowled a 193   :)

edit 2 days later: forget what I said about discoloration, I'm getting a cool looking circular bruise surrounding my thumb now!  But it feels a lot better.

    Ermandez finally visits!

Amanda came up to visit me this weekend after many months of EMPTY THREATS to do so. She didn't bring her dogs because they have fleas....so Boxer and I are thankful for that.  Anyway we ate, and went shopping to fill up her new rental "room" down in Chehalis.  Went to the goodwill and also found a sweet deal at target, it had a small refrigerator and iron, and coffee maker and electric sandwich maker all for like 35 bucks.  We got a tad inebriated and watched land of the dead which is full of hilariously over the top gore.

After she left Sunday morning, I had a very productive day watching the Seahawks barely win (woo) and playing Quake 4 and Shadow of the Colossus.  I can't wait for a sequel on the next generation hardware, you can tell they pushed the poor PS2 about as far as it can go and the framerate gets pretty choppy at times, but its quite fun.

I ordered a new laptop too.  The one I use at home is an eMachines 5309 which I got on the cheap from eBay because I wanted a basic laptop to surf/chat from as I watched TV.  Now its been very useful, but its starting to show its age.  My new laptop will be a Dell Inspiron 9300:

I upgraded it with these goodies:
    Intel® Pentium® M Processor 760 (2 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
Upgraded the screen to 1920x1200 native res (holy crap!)
1GB of delicious dual channel DDR2 RAM
     256MB NVIDA® GeForce™ Go 6800
60GB 7200rpm Hard Drive  (just upgraded the RPM on this one, 60GB is plenty)

I am getting it with the XP media center OS on it, which I have never used.  The reason is that the xbox 360 will only be able to stream media from PCs running media center OS (which I think is lame, so whatever).

Last week I was in the MSN Poker Tournament for the "give campaign" which is MS's annual give money to charity drive.  There were 75 entrants on the day I played and I got busted out in 8th place, and made the final table.  Only the top 5 got to move on, maybe next year I'll make it.

Oh yah and best buy sucks for being sold out of Batman Begins special edition every time I call or go there.

    Nothing much...

I saw Serenity last night, I really liked it.  Its too bad that its probably not going to make enough money to warrant a sequel.  It helps to see at least the firefly pilot episode to get a bearing on all the characters, but even if you don't know anything about firefly the characters and story are engaging enough to keep you entertained.

Been riding my motorcycle fairly regularly, I've put 1000 miles on it since I got it....it gets about 40-50 miles per gallon which is a nice.  I ordered a new helmet a few days ago when I saw a really good deal on them -
and no I didn't pay anywhere close to $900  :)
A tad better than the $50 flip-face I got off ebay I'd say.

The 2 women I care most about are both going through some emotional shitstorms, and I kind of feel like theres nothing I can offer either of them to help them...its frustrating.  Its one of the disadvantages of not having a lot of life experience.  I tell them what I think, but no matter what I say it always sounds like common sense and cliches to me...it probably does to them too.

    TV stuff:
Ugh this Jailbreak show on FOX is lame.  Time to take it off my auto-record list.  LOST is as weird as ever, I think the show's purpose is to see how many theories people can think up on internet forums. Nip/Tuck is still awesome, Daily show is still awesome, Survivor is more of THE SAME...I really hope they switch it up somehow soon. Rome is OK, but I find it boring more often than not.  24 is still the best show...hope it comes back soon.

Taking a C# class at work, its been easy so far but I always find the first part of every programming class easy.  From loops onward its difficult...Its stuff I can do, but I wish it would just "click" and be easy the way things used to in high school.

Halo and Halo2 are both mediocre games at best.  Thats right I said it.  Play through Half Life 2 and if you can still call Halo an exceptional franchise then you're delusional or something.  Your opinions are wrong if they conflict with mine.  Consoles suck for first person shooters...well console controllers suck for first person shooters.  I'm not particularly excited about the xbox 360, but I will no doubt get one shortly after release out of habit.

ok thats enough brain dump for tonight.
    8월 31일

    first car-less day

So today I rode my motorcycle to work for the first time, staying off the highway.  I'm going to give it a week or so before I try it.  On some of the streets to work its fairly common to hit 50mph, so getting to 70 on the 1.5 miles of 520 between my house and work isn't that big of a deal, but I'm trying to take things somewhat slowly.

It went very smoothly, bike is running well, and the ride was uneventful, but very fun.  My riding jacket arrived today and it fits well and looks good.

It looks like gas prices are just going to get worse and worse.  I wonder what price its going to take before people  start changing their driving habits.  They say that labor day weekend travel is going to be up this year over last year......I wonder what happens when gas hits 5 bucks a gallon.  It cost me 52 bucks to fill up my car last time.  *sigh*

    Stay off the streets

Finished my cycle training this weekend.

Saturday we went through a bunch of easy stuff, learning how to walk the bike around without it falling over, finding the friction zone (between no clutch and fully engaged clutch), starting and stopping, simple turns, and emergency stops.  All of it was very easy, emercency stops were fun....the only way you can really screw up is to clamp the front brake and do a high-side fall.  Also took a written exam and got a 98....but the questions were so easy I can't see anyone with a brain having a problem with it.

After that class I felt confident enough to take my own bike out for an hour or so on the closed road right down the street.  Its a perfect training ground, its closed like I said, new asphalt, has a 90- degree turn, straights, and long sweeping turn up (or down) a hill.  Plus its very wide so its easy to U-turn.  I practiced low speed sharp turning and figure 8s for probably 45 minutes because I knew it was part of sunday's training, and is on the test.  I figured if I could get good at it with my bigger bike, then it would be cake on the 125cc trainer bikes.

I also opened her up a little bit, got up to 50MPH or so (which felt like 120), and did some nice leans through the corners.  I felt a little uncomfortable since I don't have my riding armor yet, so called it a night since I had to get up at 6am for the next day's class.

Sunday we did the slow turning, as well as a bunch of fun stuff.  Navigating obstacles (driving over 2 by 4s in the road), emergency stops in a turn, changing lanes, avoidance swerves, and higher speed turns.  Everything was easy except for the slow turn crap.  I was ok at it, but never felt truly in control the way I did with the other stuff.

Time for the on-course test.  It consists of 4 parts: Emergency stop, swerve, low speed figure 8, and higher speed turning.  Turns out I go last in every one....long enough to get nervous watching everyone else.

First up is the figure 8...I did ok, but I had to put a foot down.  I didn't feel bad about it because there was probably only 1 or 2 who did it without going outside the box ot putting a foot down. Next was swerve..I nailed that just as I had been doing all day.   Next was emergency stop - I did it perfectly but I didn't downshift to 1st during the stop like I was supposed to...They didn't see it though  :)  Last was the turn.  This is taking a right hand turn through cones and is timed - you have to go through it at a certain speed or higher or get docked points.  You also have to use the outside-inside-outside turning method and demonstrate countersteering and leaning into the turn.  I went into the turn pretty hot, leaned hard and shot through that thing.  After I was done I immediately knew 2 things I did wrong, but I didn't think those 2 things were point docks - I didn't look at the turn exit point during the turn, and I looked down at the lines which generally is bad because if you look at the lines, you drive over the lines.

So we sat around for a half hour while he added up scores.  If you get 80 you pass, and more points are subtracted for bigger mistakes.  I was pretty sure I passed, but I could think of small things I did wrong in every test, so I was still nervous.  Finally he calls my name and asked me what I think I got.  I said 85 and he shows me the sheet with 95 on it.  *wave of relief*

He showed me the scoresheet and it says -5 for the foot down, and perfect for everything else.  He said I went through the turn faster than any student he's seen and that he thought there was no way I was going to make it at the speed I was going - he thought I would either go wide, or I was leaning over so far I would scrape a footpeg on the ground.  /me looks smug.

Anyway this is what I get for my weekend of work:

My bike is insured starting tomorrow.  I'm going to see if I can find some time to go get my endorsement tomorrow so I can start practicing on streets with real traffic. All in all it was a fun experience and I think it will improve my car driving skills as well.  I recommend it for anyone, even if you don't plan on buying a bike its a fun skill to posess.

    Bike Bug got me

So I've been bitten by the motorcycle bug.  I've wanted one for as long as I've been driving (damn...17 years?) and I've finally taken the plunge.  This Thursday plus all this weekend I'll be taking the Motorcycle safety course, and upon my completion I get a motorcycle endorsement without having to take any DMV tests.  I've been reading as much online stuff about the course as I can, tips for how to do better on the various drills and tests, and tips for the written testing, so I feel quite prepared.

As a driver I'm one of those guys that always knows everything thats going on around him, (picture a terminator style view calculating the speed and vector of all surrounding vehicles and determining all possible changes in course for every car and my possible reactions for any circumstance in real time) so I'm pretty confident that I'm going to excel as a rider.

So after doing some research and talking to some other riders who agreed that 600cc is not too big to be a starter bike, especially for someone my size, I made an offer on a 1992 Ninja ZX6:

    Behold:

Its going to be painful looking at it and just sitting on it until I pass my class.  Then depending on how confident I feel I can "graduate" to riding around the neighborhood and to work (staying off 520) and then hit the highway after 2 or 3 weeks.

I need to get an armored jacket and some better gloves before I get the speed up.  Anyway I'll have a mega update talking about the class after its done, so stay tuned.

You realize 'dumb' can be witty--after all isn't that the Simpsons' philosophy?--but rudeness for its own sake, 'gross-out' humor and most other things found in a fraternity leave you totally flat.

I guess you just have a more cerebral approach than most. You have the perfect mindset for a joke writer or staff writer.

    Anjli's Birthday

Went to Ibiza tonight for Anjli's birthday.  From the website it looked ultra snooty so I wasn't particularly looking forward to it, but every once in a while I like an excuse to put on the dockers, shiny shoes, and lambskin leather jacket.

Anyway the food was good, the drinks were better, the music was right up my alley (DJ Phil Anthony was ripping up the 1 and the 2 plus two live drummers with so much cowbell even Christopher Walken would be happy) and lots of way-out-of-my-league women to keep my eyes occupied.  If I had been there by myself I would have felt *so* out of place....I'm really not a club guy.

    Happy Birthday Anjli!

Saturday morning I drove down to centralia to take my friend Amanda to the beach.  We had talked about doing this before, but this is the first time we ever actually backed up the talk with action.  We went over to long beach on the Washington Coast.  The hard part of the drive is from here to Centralia, as the drive from Centralia to the coast is fairly scenic and not too far.

When we got there we checked into the Super 8 (only the best!) and met the absolutely insane hotel manager.  One of those guys who was overly excited with every small thing he noticed and seemed to take great joy in writing down my name as well as reading my t-shirt.  Apparently it was worth about 30 seconds of his wheezing forced laughter.

Meanwhile Amanda was feeling progressively worse and worse.  Bad headache, fever, sore throat, and aches were so bad she wanted to go to the emergency room.  So they checked her out and they were pretty sure it was strep throat, so they loaded her up with drugs and we were on our way.  We then quickly discovered that Long Beach is full of overpriced restaurants, overweight tourists, and tourist traps large enough to ensnare them.

We hit the beach for a little bit, bought some GIGANTOR ice cream cones and went back to the room when it was getting dark.  All of Amanda's drugs caused drowsiness, so she was out around 9 while I drank vodka cranberries and played online poker thanks to super 8 free wireless internet (You get what you pay for, the connection was pretty crappy).

    Day 2!

Woke up at 8 thanks to noisy ass neighbors and headed down for the predictably mediocre continental breakfast.  (Oh snap did someone say both froot loops AND donuts??) and this time we headed a bit north to Pacific Pines State Park.  We were the only ones in the parking lot, the whole area seemed pretty dead, especially for a beautiful summer weekend day.  Walked out to the beach and I proceeded to burn myself on all exposed skin areas for the next hour or so.  It was a perfect day, breezy and not TOO hot, but definitely hot enough to start up a sweat.  It was too hot for her doggies tho.  Time to grab some lunch and head back home.

All in all it was enjoyable spending time with a good friend in a pretty location, we'll have to do it again soon in a different place.  Maybe camping?  Anyone have suggestions?

Got some nice shots with my new camera, check out the photo album of the beach trip here!

    Sore and busy

So Sunday I climbed Mt Si, which is a local mountain and popular hike spot.  4 miles to the top and about a 3500 foot altitude gain.  Mention it to any serious climber and they will laugh in your face, but it was about the toughest hike I'd want to do without some real training.  I went with a friend, Charlie and we pretty much kicked the mountain's ass.

The first mile and a half was hurting until my cardiovascular system kicked into the right mode, then I was pretty good to the top.  The way down killed my legs, and today I'm having a grand old time going up and down stairs, but I'm actually better than I thought I'd be.

Kind of a busy week.  Tomorrow after work I'm moving a dining set up to a storage area in anacortes.  Wednesday we have our annual MSN golf outing (Anjli you better go!) then that night I'm taking Courtnee to dinner and to see the island since Friday she's leaving to New York for a month  :(

Thursday is poker night, and Friday I prepare for a big weekend with my friend Amanda who is down in Centralia.  We are going to Long Beach (Washington Coast) to relax on the beach.

Being busy is mixed emotions because I have a lot of work to do, and I'd probably be spending late nights at work if I didn't have these other things.

I ordered a new digital camera, a Canon Powershot G6.  My old camera is definitely showing its age.  Its about 6 years old, and even though its 2.3 megapixels were quite impressive in 1999, they just aren't cutting it these days.  I will be sure to get some good photos at the beach.

    *grumble*

Ok, so in anticipation for doglan coming up in 9 days, a while ago I upgraded basically my whole system so I can play the shiny new games in the high resolutions we all love.   It worked fine for probably 3 weeks, then everything seemed to go bad.  The machine started locking up randomly, and these weren't the normal lockups where you reboot and everything is fine again.  These were ultra evil lockups that corrupted the hard drive so that the only way I could get back into windows was to boot to a floppy, run chkdsk and let it fix errors and then boot off the hard drive again.

So it must be the hard drive right?  I went to Fry's and bought a shiny new SATA hard drive and hooked it up and its doing the EXACT same thing.  I ran memtest for about 2 hours and it showed no errors, so basically the only things it can be are video card, motherboard, power supply, or CPU, as there isn't anything else in the system.  I don't see how this kind of problem could be caused by the video card or CPU, so I RMA'd the motherboard back to the manufacturer and they kept it for about 2 weeks.

I just got it back today and they said they ran benchmarks on it for 72 hours and saw no problems.  So I plugged all my stuff back in, and I couldn't even get windows installed before it started locking up (the first time).  Finally got windows on it, and it almost immediately started doing the same shit. This is so frustrating.  So tomorrow I'm going to take my video card back to Fry's and get a replacement, and also take my CPU to work and (hopefully) pop it into my work machine and run it all day to see if I have any problems with it.  If the CPU is fine, and if the same stuff happens when I get the replacement video card I really am out of options, I'm going to have to just bite the bullet and get a new motherboard and case (which it probably gonna run me another $300).  I guess I can try to sell my shuttle "as is" on ebay, but I will probably only get $100 for it if I'm lucky and it cost me $400.  ^%$#^%#^%*&#&*#

    just venting...
